Pixel Tribe's Goddess Order: A Deep Dive into Pixel Art, World-Building, and Combat

This interview features Ilsun (Art Director) and Terron J. (Contents Director) from Pixel Tribe, the developers behind the upcoming Kakao Games title, Goddess Order. They discuss the creation of this pixel art RPG.

Crafting Pixel Perfection

Droid Gamers: What inspires your pixel sprites?

Ilsun: Goddess Order's high-quality pixel art aims for a console-level feel, emphasizing narrative. Each character and background is meticulously pixelated. Inspiration draws from countless games and stories, focusing on nuanced expression of form and movement through pixel arrangement rather than direct references. The creative process involves a constant intake of inspiration from daily life and a collaborative effort with the team. The initial characters, Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan, were collaboratively developed, shaping the game's overall art style. Further character design involves close collaboration with scenario writers and combat designers, iteratively refining concepts through discussion and sketching.

World-Building from the Ground Up

Droid Gamers: How do you approach world-building in a fantasy RPG?

Terron J.: World-building in Goddess Order originates from the core characters—Lisbeth, Violet, and Yan. Their inherent characteristics, missions, and stories shaped the game's world. The development process involves fleshing out these characters, exploring their narratives, and witnessing their growth. The game's emphasis on manual controls stems from the characters' strength and the immersive storytelling experience.

Designing Dynamic Combat

Droid Gamers: How are combat styles and animations designed?

Terron J.: Goddess Order's combat system features three characters using linked skills. Design prioritizes strategic battle formations, assigning unique roles (e.g., powerful attacks, support) to each character. The team ensures each character offers a unique advantage and that controls are intuitive.

Ilsun: Visual representation of combat characteristics is key. This includes weapon choice, character appearance, and movements to emphasize personality. Despite the 2D pixel art, Goddess Order features three-dimensional character movements. The team uses real-world weapon models to study movement for authenticity.

Terron J.: Technical optimization is crucial for smooth mobile gameplay, ensuring consistent performance across devices without compromising cutscene immersion.

The Future of Goddess Order

Ilsun: Future updates will focus on expanding the narrative, including chapter scenarios and individual knight origin stories. Additional activities like quests and treasure hunts are planned. The team also aims to introduce advanced content with refined controls.
