Silent Hill f marks a significant milestone as the first entry in the Silent Hill series to receive an 18+ age rating in Japan, breaking from the franchise's previous classifications.
As shown in the opening moments of the Japanese reveal trailer unveiled last night, Silent Hill f carries a Mature rating in the U.S., PEGI 18 in Europe, and CERO:Z in Japan—the latter being reserved exclusively for content suitable only for adults aged 18 and over.
While the game is still in active development and subject to potential rating adjustments, this distinction sets it apart from earlier entries. According to Automaton, prior mainline titles developed in Japan—Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, and Silent Hill: The Room—were all rated CERO:C, indicating suitability for players 15 and older. Other entries developed outside Japan typically received either CERO:C or CERO:D (17+). Notably, even the upcoming Silent Hill 2 Remake by Bloober Team holds a CERO:C rating in Japan, despite earning a Mature (17+) classification in most Western regions.
Last night’s broadcast of Silent Hill Transmission, Konami’s dedicated online showcase for the franchise, focused entirely on Silent Hill f—the first mainline installment in over 13 years. Originally announced in 2022, the game is set in 1960s Japan and follows the story of Shimizu Hinako, a teenage girl grappling with intense societal, familial, and personal pressures. The narrative is penned by Ryukishi07, acclaimed writer of the When They Cry visual novel series.
The reveal trailer portrays Hinako in escalating states of anguish—bloodied, injured, and with her school uniform torn—offering a visceral glimpse into the psychological and physical horror she endures. While gameplay remains under wraps, the cinematic footage highlights the game’s atmospheric setting, grotesque creature designs, and a haunting alternate dimension distinguished not by industrial decay, but by eerie fields of crimson flowers—an evocative departure from the series’ signature fog and rust.
No release date was announced for Silent Hill f, and there was no update regarding No Code’s Silent Hill title, Townfall, during the presentation.
