Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has officially been retitled Supergirl, following confirmation from DC Universe head James Gunn.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn detailed the reasoning behind this shift, which mirrors the decision to rename July’s Superman: Legacy simply as Superman. He disclosed that his creative team conducts what is known as a “premortem” analysis. This process involves anticipating potential pitfalls before filming begins to prevent box office failures.
“I’m always cutting,” Gunn noted. “We perform a premortem, which involves gathering the project team usually two months before shooting starts. We ask hypothetically: ‘If this film becomes an epic disaster, what are we doing today that will cause it?’ Everyone speaks freely.” He explained that while other productions often feature whispered concerns—such as casting mismatches or delayed production designers—the premortem brings these issues to the forefront.
Gunn revealed that Superman: Legacy was a primary topic. “Even though I originally titled it, I wasn’t entirely convinced,” he said. “First, I’m tired of the ‘superhero title + colon + subtitle’ format. Second, while the movie deals with legacy, the title felt like looking backward when we are moving forward. The team agreed immediately: ‘Change it.’”
DC Universe: Every Upcoming Movie and TV Show

Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, stars Milly Alcock in the lead role. While details remain scarce—with Alcock staying quiet in recent press—A Minecraft Movie star Jason Momoa has teased his highly anticipated Lobo costume. Gunn later joked about the buzz surrounding the character.
The film, now titled simply Supergirl, is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026.
