'I Know It's Not What Everybody Else Is Doing' — Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Will Keep on Putting PlayStation and Nintendo Logos in Microsoft Showcases

Microsoft's recent shift in showcasing multiplatform games during Xbox events marks a significant change in strategy. Previously, announcements of games coming to rival consoles like the PlayStation 5 were often made separately or after the Xbox showcase, leading to inconsistencies in messaging. This is evident in comparing Microsoft's June 2024 and January 2025 showcases. The June event omitted PS5 logos for several titles, while the January event prominently featured them.

This contrasts sharply with Sony and Nintendo's approach, which continues to focus on their respective consoles as the primary platform for game announcements, even for multiplatform titles. Their showcases typically avoid mentioning competing consoles.

Xbox head Phil Spencer clarified this change in strategy, emphasizing transparency and the desire to reach a wider audience. He acknowledged the logistical challenges of coordinating assets across multiple platforms but stated the goal is to clearly indicate where players can access Xbox games. While acknowledging platform differences, Spencer prioritizes making games available across as many platforms as possible.

Spencer's statement suggests a future where Xbox showcases will routinely include PS5 and potentially Nintendo Switch 2 logos for multiplatform titles. This anticipates a June 2025 showcase potentially featuring titles like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and Call of Duty with prominent PS5 branding alongside Xbox. However, it's unlikely that Sony and Nintendo will reciprocate this approach.
