Metal Gear Pioneered a Storytelling Concept in Stealth Games

Hideo Kojima Reflects on Metal Gear's 37th Anniversary: The Radio Transceiver's Revolutionary Storytelling

July 13th marked the 37th anniversary of Konami's groundbreaking stealth action-adventure game, Metal Gear. Creator Hideo Kojima used social media to reflect on the game's legacy and the evolution of the gaming industry. He highlighted the in-game radio transceiver as Metal Gear's most significant innovation.

Kojima emphasized that while the stealth mechanics are widely praised, the radio transceiver was a revolutionary storytelling tool. It allowed protagonist Solid Snake to communicate, receiving crucial information about boss identities, character betrayals, and team member deaths. This interactive element, he explained, also served to guide players, clarifying gameplay mechanics and rules.

Kojima's tweet stated, "Metal Gear was packed with things ahead of its time, but the biggest invention was the radio transceiver in storytelling." He further explained that the transceiver's real-time interaction ensured the narrative progressed dynamically with the player's actions, creating a more immersive experience. He contrasted this with narratives unfolding independently of the player's immediate actions, which can lead to a disconnect. The transceiver, he argued, allowed simultaneous portrayal of the player's situation and foreshadowing of other characters' stories. Kojima expressed pride that this "gimmick" continues to influence modern shooter games.

Kojima's Continued Creative Journey: OD, Death Stranding 2, and Beyond

At 60, Kojima openly discussed the physical challenges of aging but stressed the value of accumulated knowledge, experience, and wisdom. He believes these qualities enhance a creator's ability to anticipate societal trends and project outcomes, leading to more accurate and effective game development. He stated that his "accuracy of creation" – encompassing planning, experimentation, development, production, and release – continually improves with time.

Kojima, renowned for his cinematic storytelling in video games, is currently involved in multiple projects. He's collaborating with actor Jordan Peele on "OD" and his studio, Kojima Productions, is preparing for the next Death Stranding installment, which A24 will adapt into a live-action film.

He believes that technological advancements will enable developers to achieve feats unimaginable three decades ago, simplifying and enhancing the creative process. He concluded that as long as his passion for creation endures, he will continue to innovate.
