Ex-Bethesda Dev Predicts Fallout 3 Remaster Will Enhance 'Not Good' Gun Combat

With the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, fans are eagerly anticipating which Bethesda game might receive the remaster treatment next. Speculation is rife that Fallout 3 could be on the horizon, especially following leaks from 2023. If Bethesda decides to remaster this iconic 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG, several improvements could enhance the gaming experience significantly.

Bruce Nesmith, a designer on Fallout 3, has highlighted the game's gun combat as an area that was "not good" and would likely see significant enhancements in a remastered version. In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested that the shooting mechanics in a Fallout 3 Remastered would be more akin to those seen in Fallout 4.

"What did you see in Fallout 4? That will tell you what they felt was necessary to change from Fallout 3," Nesmith stated. He praised the work done on gun combat in Fallout 4, noting that Fallout 3 was Bethesda's first attempt at a shooter-style game, and the improvements made were remarkable.

Oblivion Remastered, developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, serves as a benchmark for what fans might expect from a Fallout 3 remaster. This version runs at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, but more importantly, it includes substantial enhancements across the board. From updated leveling systems and character creation to revamped combat animations and in-game menus, Oblivion Remastered also features new dialogue, a refined third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology. These changes have been well-received by the community, with some fans suggesting it's more of a remake than a remaster. Bethesda, however, has clarified their decision to label it as a remaster.

Nesmith believes that a Fallout 3 Remastered would likely follow a similar path of improvement and change. He acknowledged that the combat in the original Fallout 3 didn't match up to contemporary shooters of its time, being an RPG shooter rather than a run-and-gun experience. He anticipates that the advancements made in Fallout 4 would be incorporated into a remastered Fallout 3.

"Oblivion wasn’t just brought up to the 2011 version of Skyrim," Nesmith added. "It was brought up to something that, at least on the surface, looks like it exceeds the most recent graphics update in Skyrim." He went as far as to say that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered could be considered "Oblivion 2.0" due to its impressive overhaul.

Bethesda's current workload is extensive, with ongoing projects like The Elder Scrolls VI, possible expansions for Starfield, continued support for Fallout 76, and the upcoming Fallout TV show's second season set in New Vegas. With all these developments, fans have much to look forward to in the coming years.
