Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature the in-game messaging system present in its predecessors. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a pragmatic one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to read and write messages, a core element of the asynchronous communication system found in other Soulsborne titles.
While the messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware games, fosters community interaction and engagement, its inclusion in Nightreign was deemed detrimental to the intended gameplay experience. The system's removal aims to streamline gameplay and maintain a consistently intense pace.
Preservation of Asynchronous Features
This omission doesn't signify the removal of all asynchronous features. Key elements like the bloodstain mechanic will return, enhanced to allow players to observe and even loot the ghosts of fallen comrades. This reinforces the focus on a more immediate and intense multiplayer experience.
A "Compressed" RPG Experience
FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign is a "compressed RPG," prioritizing variety and minimizing downtime. The game's three-day structure reflects this ambition. The removal of the messaging system contributes to this compressed, intensely focused gameplay loop.
Release Date
Elden Ring Nightreign's release is targeted for 2025, as revealed during The Game Awards 2024. A more precise release window is yet to be announced by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
