The Struggles of BioWare: The Uncertain Future of Dragon Age and the State of New Mass Effect

Authore: SebastianUpdate:Mar 18,2025

BioWare, once a titan of RPG development, finds itself at a crossroads. The future of Dragon Age hangs in the balance, casting a shadow over the anticipated next Mass Effect installment. This article delves into the challenges facing the studio and explores the uncertain path ahead.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard, intended as a triumphant return to form, instead became a critical and commercial disappointment. Metascore ratings plummeted to a dismal 3/10, with sales reaching only half of EA's projections. This failure leaves the future of BioWare's RPG projects, including Dragon Age and the next Mass Effect, shrouded in uncertainty.

The Long Road to Dragon Age 4

The development of Dragon Age 4 spanned nearly a decade, marked by numerous setbacks and shifts in direction. Initially envisioned as a trilogy following the success of Dragon Age: Inquisition (with a planned release window of 2019-2020), the project encountered significant hurdles. Resource reallocation to Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2016, followed by Andromeda's poor performance and the subsequent restructuring of BioWare Montreal, significantly hampered progress. For two years, Dragon Age 4 existed primarily as a concept, developed by a small team.

In 2017, EA's push for live-service games led to a reimagining of Dragon Age as a live-service title (codenamed Joplin). However, the failure of Anthem in 2019 prompted a return to a single-player focus, resulting in the project being renamed Morrison. This shift necessitated rebuilding teams and redefining priorities, further delaying the game's release. Officially announced as Dreadwolf in 2022, the subtitle eventually changed before release, reflecting narrative adjustments.

The Veilguard launched on October 31, 2024, to disappointing sales figures of 1.5 million copies—nearly 50% below projections, despite positive critical reception.

Key Departures at BioWare

The underperformance of The Veilguard triggered significant restructuring at BioWare, including layoffs and reassignments. Several key figures departed, including veteran writers Patrick and Karin Weekes (responsible for iconic characters across the Mass Effect and Dragon Age universes), game director Corinne Bouche, character artist Cheryl Chi, and narrative designer Silvia Feketekuti. These departures, along with others, significantly reduced BioWare's workforce. While the studio remains open, the loss of experienced talent is undeniable.

The reduced workforce, coupled with the reallocation of resources to other EA projects, highlights the impact of The Veilguard's failure on BioWare's future.

Dragon Age 4 Tried to Mimic Mass Effect but Failed

Interviews revealed that The Veilguard drew heavily from Mass Effect 2, particularly its companion system and approval mechanics. While certain aspects, like the final act, were successful, the attempt to replicate Mass Effect's strengths ultimately fell short. The game lacked the depth and complexity expected from a Dragon Age title, simplifying its narrative and diminishing the impact of player choices. The reliance on previous games' lore was minimized, resulting in diminished character arcs and a less engaging story.

Mass Effect

In essence, The Veilguard succeeded as an action-adventure game but failed to capture the essence of a Dragon Age RPG.

Is Dragon Age Dead?

EA executives hinted that The Veilguard might have fared better as a live-service game. However, the company's Q3 2024 financial reports emphasized investments in other franchises, suggesting a cautious approach to single-player RPGs. While the future of Dragon Age remains uncertain, the passion of the fanbase and the potential for future exploration of the world suggest that the series may not be entirely extinguished.

Dragon Age

Former BioWare employees have expressed interest in further developing the Dragon Age universe, but their departures raise questions about the feasibility of these ambitions.

What About the Next Mass Effect?

Mass Effect 5, announced in 2020, is currently in pre-production with a smaller team. While details are scarce, it aims for greater photorealism and is expected to continue the storyline of the original trilogy, possibly incorporating elements from Andromeda. However, given the studio's restructuring and the extended development cycles, a release before 2027 seems unlikely.

Next Mass Effect

The success of Mass Effect 5 will depend heavily on BioWare's ability to learn from the mistakes of The Veilguard and deliver a compelling and well-developed game.
