In a recent interview with Famitsu on April 24, Sucker Punch unveiled exciting new insights into their latest project, Ghost of Yotei. This standalone sequel to the acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima enhances both gameplay and narrative depth. Creative Director Jason Cornell emphasized that the game offers unprecedented freedom, allowing players to explore vast maps and approach objectives in their preferred style. He stated, "Players can discover the whereabouts of the Yotei Six independently and choose their method of vengeance."

The excitement around Ghost of Yotei escalated last week with the announcement of its PS5 release date and the unveiling of a new trailer, "The Onryō’s List." This trailer introduced fans to the protagonist, Atsu, and her quest for vengeance against the Yotei Six.

More Melee Weapons

Ghost of Yotei not only expands on exploration but also on combat options. The latest trailer hinted at a broader arsenal for Atsu, and Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed this in the interview. Players will have access to an odachi, a chain sickle, double swords, and a spear, in addition to the iconic samurai sword. Fox stressed that while the sword remains central, players can master other weapons through interactions with various masters and teachers throughout the game and open world.

Fox also highlighted the flexibility of Atsu's combat approach, noting her non-samurai status removes traditional honor constraints. This allows her to utilize any available weapon on the battlefield, including picking up and throwing enemy weapons. He explained, "While there are limitations to what can be used, if you can handle it, you're free to use it."

Ezo as the Setting

Set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), Ghost of Yotei immerses players in a lawless yet beautiful environment, as described by Cornell. The game will also showcase the Ainu culture, an indigenous group from Japan's northern regions. The development team's dedication to authenticity led them to visit Hokkaido, engage with local experts, and explore museums to accurately represent the Ainu people and their culture. Cornell's awe at Hokkaido's natural beauty inspired the team to bring this setting to life for players worldwide.

Following the success of Ghost of Tsushima, which was lauded for its respectful portrayal of Japanese culture and history, Sucker Punch aims to maintain this high standard with Ghost of Yotei. The game will highlight the "dangers lurking in the magnificent wilderness of Ezo."

Ghost of Yotei is set to launch exclusively on the PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates by checking out our dedicated article below!
