The creator of the high-profile Bloodborne 60fps patch, Lance McDonald, has received a DMCA takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment. McDonald shared this news via a tweet, stating that he complied with the request by removing links to the patch he had previously posted online. He also referenced a YouTube video he created in 2021 about the patch and mentioned a humorous encounter with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, where he disclosed his work on the 60fps mod for Bloodborne.
Bloodborne, developed by FromSoftware and released on the PS4, has become a significant enigma in the gaming world due to Sony's lack of updates or enhancements since its launch. Fans have been clamoring for a next-gen patch to boost the game's frame rate from 30fps to 60fps, as well as for a remaster or a sequel. In the absence of official updates, enthusiasts like McDonald have taken it upon themselves to improve the game's performance. Recently, advancements in PS4 emulation, notably through ShadPS4, have allowed players to experience Bloodborne in 60fps on PC, which may have prompted Sony's aggressive response. IGN has reached out to Sony for further comment on the matter.
In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Shuhei Yoshida shared his personal theory on why Bloodborne has not received any updates or remasters. He speculated that FromSoftware's president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, who is deeply attached to Bloodborne, is too busy with other projects to work on it himself and does not want anyone else to touch it. Yoshida suggested that PlayStation respects Miyazaki's wishes, which could explain the game's inactivity.
Despite Bloodborne remaining dormant nearly a decade after its initial release, there is some hope for its future. In interviews, Miyazaki has acknowledged that the game could benefit from being released on more modern hardware, although he often deflects direct questions about the game, citing that FromSoftware does not own the IP.
