Application Description

This Western Tamang-Nepali dictionary is a collaborative effort by Western Tamang speakers from various districts in Nepal, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Lamjung, Chitawan, and Kanchanpur. The dictionary translates Tamang words (source language) into Nepali (target language), making it a valuable resource for comparative linguistic studies and those unfamiliar with Tamang.

Tamang, a Tibeto-Burman language, boasts a significant number of speakers in Nepal, ranking fifth among the country's 123 languages according to the 2011 census. While primarily spoken around the Kathmandu Valley, Tamang communities exist throughout Nepal. The language's origins, according to the 'Do:ra song', trace back to Tibet, with initial settlement in the Himalayan region. Cultural practices, such as the upward positioning of deceased bodies, reflect this unique heritage.

Tamang exhibits two primary dialects: Eastern and Western. Western Tamang, also known as 'Nhurba' or 'Nhuppa', is the focus of this dictionary and is spoken in the districts listed above. The dictionary's creation addresses a critical need, as the prevalence of Western Tamang is diminishing due to the increasing use of Nepali as the dominant language. This resource aims to preserve, promote, and develop this important language.

The dictionary is open to improvement, and feedback from the Tamang community, stakeholders, and other interested parties is highly valued.
