Doom: The Dark Ages – A Medieval Twist on Classic Gameplay
EDGE magazine recently unveiled fresh gameplay details for Doom: The Dark Ages, promising a significant shift in the franchise. The upcoming title prioritizes narrative, presenting a more direct storyline than previous installments, where lore was largely confined to collectible text logs. This time, the story takes center stage.
The game's setting evokes a medieval atmosphere, a departure from the series' futuristic roots. Even the iconic weaponry will undergo a design overhaul to maintain thematic consistency.

While retaining the series' signature level-based structure, Doom: The Dark Ages boasts the largest levels yet, seamlessly blending dungeon crawling with open-world exploration. The game's chapters are structured into "acts," progressing from confined dungeons to expansive environments. Adding to the gameplay diversity, players will gain control of both a dragon and a mech.
A revolutionary addition to the Slayer's arsenal is a versatile shield that functions as a chainsaw. This throwable weapon interacts dynamically with different materials (flesh, armor, energy shields, etc.), impacting its effectiveness. The shield also facilitates a dash attack for rapid traversal, compensating for the absence of double jumps and roars from previous games. Furthermore, the shield allows for parrying, with adjustable difficulty settings to cater to various skill levels.
Parrying serves as a "reload" for melee attacks, while successful melee combat replenishes ammunition for ranged weapons, mirroring the chainsaw mechanic in DOOM Eternal. Players can choose from a fast gauntlet, a balanced shield, and a slower mace, offering diverse melee combat options.
