Deadlock Announces Major Update: Four Lanes Transformed into Three
Deadlock, the innovative third-person MOBA, has unveiled a significant update that will reshape its gameplay dynamics. This update, detailed in a Steam post on February 26, 2025, involves a crucial change from a four-lane map structure to a more streamlined three-lane configuration. This redesign is accompanied by a comprehensive overhaul of the game's map, including alterations to visuals, building layouts, pathways, neutral camps, air vents, breakables, powerup buffs, juke spots, and the mid boss.
The decision to revert to a three-lane setup from four is seen as a move to simplify the map and enhance gameplay. Deadlock's unique approach to the MOBA genre, characterized by its third-person perspective, had previously introduced a fourth lane, which some players found complicated. This update aims to address those concerns by bringing the map structure more in line with traditional MOBA designs while still retaining the game's distinctive features.
Alongside the map changes, the update also introduces modifications to the farming mechanics. Players will no longer need to last-hit enemy troopers to summon Soul Orbs, making early laning phases more accessible. Furthermore, the patch includes enhancements to the game's netcode and client performance, promising a smoother gaming experience.
Vital Update for Deadlock's Community
This update comes at a critical time for Deadlock, which saw a significant surge in player numbers in September 2024, reaching an all-time peak of 171,490 players. However, the game experienced a 90% drop in player count in the subsequent months, with only around 17,000 players active this past month. The new update is anticipated to reinvigorate the community and draw players back to the game.
Valve Developer Yoshi, in a statement made on Deadlock's Discord server in January 2025, explained the shift in the update schedule. "Going forward, major patches will no longer be on a fixed schedule. These patches will be larger than before, albeit a little bit more spaced out, and hotfixes will continue to be released as needed. We look forward to fleshing out the game in the new year," Yoshi said. This approach allows the development team more flexibility to implement significant changes and improvements.
Deadlock remains in active development and playtesting, accessible only through friend invites. While no specific release date has been announced, the game continues to evolve. For more updates and information, keep an eye on our Deadlock page.
