Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - A Fresh Take on Turn-Based Combat

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Gameplay ScreenshotDrawing inspiration from the Belle Époque era of France and beloved JRPGs, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 cleverly merges turn-based strategy with real-time action. Heavily influenced by Final Fantasy and Persona, the game aims to create a distinctive experience within the genre.

Creative director Guillaume Broche, in an interview with Eurogamer, revealed his passion for turn-based games and the desire to create a visually stunning title in this style. He cited Persona and Octopath Traveler as stylistic inspirations, stating, "If nobody wants to do it, I will do it."

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 World EnvironmentThe game's narrative centers on preventing a mysterious antagonist, the Paintress, from unleashing death once more. Players will explore unique environments, such as the gravity-defying Flying Waters, while engaging in a combat system that demands both strategic planning and quick reflexes. Players issue commands in a turn-based fashion but must react in real-time to enemy attacks. This dynamic approach draws comparisons to Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars.

Broche expressed surprise at the overwhelmingly positive reception, stating he wasn't expecting such enthusiastic response. While acknowledging Persona's influence on aspects like camera movement and menu design, Broche emphasized the significant impact of the Final Fantasy series (specifically FFVIII, IX, and X) on the game's core mechanics and overall design philosophy. He clarified that the game is an homage, not a direct clone, reflecting his personal experiences with these classic titles.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Character DesignExploration in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's open world offers complete character control, allowing players to seamlessly switch between party members and utilize unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. Broche even encourages players to experiment with unconventional strategies and character builds.

The development team aims to create a game that resonates with players as deeply as classic titles impacted their lives. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
