Palworld Remains Buy-to-Play: Developer Quashes F2P Rumors
Following reports suggesting a potential shift to a free-to-play (F2P) or games-as-a-service (GaaS) model, Palworld developer Pocketpair has officially confirmed that the game will remain a buy-to-play title. The developer issued a statement on Twitter (X) clarifying their position after an interview sparked speculation about the game's future direction.
Pocketpair emphasized that while they are exploring various options for Palworld's long-term growth and sustainability, a F2P/GaaS model is not currently under consideration. They acknowledged the challenges in finding the optimal path forward but stated that their primary goal is to create a lasting and enjoyable experience for players. The developer stressed that Palworld's core design isn't compatible with a F2P model and that adapting it would be excessively demanding. Furthermore, they reiterated their commitment to prioritizing player preferences.
The studio apologized for any anxiety caused by the earlier reports and reassured players of their dedication to making Palworld the best possible game. They clarified that the interview which generated the initial speculation was conducted several months prior.
While the F2P option is off the table, Pocketpair did mention exploring future content updates, including the possibility of skins and downloadable content (DLC) to support ongoing development. They promised further discussion on this front as plans solidify.
Separately, a potential PS5 version of Palworld was listed in a preliminary announcement for the Tokyo Game Show 2024 (TGS 2024). However, it's important to note that this list, published by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), is not considered definitive.
