Director Junya Ishizaki clarified the reasoning behind this decision in a recent Gamespot interview (February 12, 2025), emphasizing a gameplay-driven approach.
Ishizaki stated that the inclusion of these familiar bosses served primarily to enhance the gameplay experience. The diverse boss selection was crucial for the expansion's new structure and style. He acknowledged player fondness for these classic encounters but assured fans that lore consistency wasn't the primary concern. The focus was on integrating these bosses seamlessly into Nightreign's atmosphere.
"We wanted them to make sense within the atmosphere and vibe of Elden Ring Nightreign," Ishizaki explained, adding that the inclusion was also "kind of fun." While the lore implications of these cross-game appearances are minimal, players can instead focus on the main antagonist, the Night Lord, and its potential connection to the broader Elden Ring narrative.
Confirmed and Speculated Bosses from Previous FromSoftware Games
Nightreign currently boasts confirmed appearances from the Nameless King (Dark Souls 3) and the Centipede Demon (Dark Souls). The Duke's Dear Freja (Dark Souls 2) is also heavily speculated, based on a spider seen in the game's trailer that strongly resembles the boss.
The Nameless King, Gwyn's firstborn son, is a notoriously challenging optional boss in Dark Souls 3. The Centipede Demon, a six-headed monstrosity from the original Dark Souls, is believed to be a byproduct of the Witch of Izalith's creation of the Flame of Chaos.
While integrating these bosses' established lore into Elden Ring's narrative presents challenges, Ishizaki's focus on gameplay ensures a thrilling experience.
