Free-to-play 3v3 shooter Spectre Divide is set to close its doors six months after launching in September 2024, mere weeks after making its debut on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its developer, Mountaintop Studios, will also cease operations.
In an announcement shared via social media today, Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed the closure. “Unfortunately, the Season 1 launch hasn’t reached the level of success required to sustain the game and keep Mountaintop afloat,” stated the post.

Initially, the team expressed optimism, noting that the game attracted roughly 400,000 players in its first week, with a peak concurrent user count of around 10,000 across all platforms. However, as time passed, the numbers dwindled.
“As time went on, we didn’t see enough active players or incoming revenue to cover the daily operational costs of Spectre and the studio,” the post continued. “Even after stretching our remaining resources as far as possible following the PC launch, we’ve run out of funding to sustain the game.”
Despite exploring various options such as finding a publisher, securing additional investments, or seeking acquisitions, the efforts proved unsuccessful. “The industry is facing tough challenges right now,” concluded the statement.
Within the next 30 days, Spectre Divide will go offline permanently. Any funds spent by players since the Season 1 launch will be fully refunded.
This announcement contradicts earlier reports from October 2024, when Mitchell stated, “The servers aren’t shutting down, and the updates aren’t going to stop.” At the time, he assured that Mountaintop had sufficient backing to keep Spectre Divide running for the foreseeable future.
IGN’s positive preview of Spectre Divide in August 2024 praised its innovative Duality system, allowing players to control two characters during matches. Unfortunately, the game joins a growing list of recent live-service failures, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League from Rocksteady and Concord by Sony.
