Respawn Entertainment, known for developing Apex Legends, has recently canceled an unannounced incubation project. This decision led to the layoff of a small, unspecified number of employees involved in the project. The news first surfaced through a LinkedIn post by a former production coordinator, which has since been removed. The post revealed that the individual was part of the team working on this project for the past year before its cancellation.
IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this project, which was a multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS). This new project was being developed by a team that previously worked on another canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. Although the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, sources have described it as a "small" group. Additionally, at least one individual connected to the project has stated on LinkedIn that their departure was voluntary.
This development is part of a broader trend of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring within Electronic Arts (EA). The trend began in 2023 with significant job cuts at BioWare and Codemasters. Nearly a year ago, EA announced the layoff of 670 employees across the company and the termination of several projects, including the Star Wars FPS. These cuts also affected around two dozen Respawn employees. Since then, BioWare has undergone restructuring, with developers being reassigned to other projects and further layoffs occurring.
IGN has contacted Electronic Arts for a statement regarding these developments.
