Nicolas Cage has issued a strong warning against the use of artificial intelligence in acting, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards a creative "dead end." In his Saturn Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor (Dream Scenario), Cage voiced his concerns, as reported by Variety.
He expressed his gratitude to the film's director, Kristoffer Borgli, but then shifted his focus to the burgeoning AI landscape. Cage declared his belief in the irreplaceable role of human experience in artistic expression, stating that robots are incapable of truly reflecting the human condition. He argued that even minimal AI manipulation of a performance compromises its integrity, purity, and truth, ultimately serving only financial interests.
Cage emphasized the vital function of art, including acting, in mirroring the complexities of the human experience through a process of thoughtful and emotional recreation – a process he believes AI cannot replicate. He cautioned that allowing AI to take over this creative process will result in art devoid of heart, losing its edge and becoming diluted. He urged actors to protect themselves from AI interference, advocating for authentic and honest self-expression.
Cage's stance echoes those of other actors who have voiced similar concerns, particularly within the voice acting industry where AI has been used to recreate performances, even in high-profile video games. Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) are among those who have publicly criticized AI's impact on voice actors' livelihoods, describing its use as a form of income theft.
The filmmaking community is also divided on the issue. While Tim Burton expressed concern, labeling AI-generated art as "very disturbing," Zack Snyder has advocated for embracing AI's potential rather than resisting its integration into filmmaking.
