James Gunn Confirms 'Absolutely Zero CG' in Superman’s Flying Face After TV Spot Raises Eyebrows

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addressed online criticism regarding Superman's facial expression in a recent TV spot for the upcoming film. The 30-second spot featured new footage, including Lex Luthor near the Fortress of Solitude and Superman performing a barrel roll during flight. This flying sequence sparked debate, with some viewers noting Superman's face appeared unusually still while his hair and cape moved dynamically. Some attributed this to CGI imperfections.

However, Gunn clarified on Threads that no CGI was used on Superman's face. He explained the effect was due to the use of a wide-angle lens at close range. He confirmed the Svalbard, Norway location and David Corenswet's performance were entirely real. The seemingly knowing smirk, therefore, is a genuine expression from Corenswet.

Despite this clarification, the shot continues to generate discussion, with comparisons drawn to the flying scenes of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, also directed by Gunn. Excitement for the Superman film remains high, despite the ongoing debate. The film, the first in the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, is set for release on July 11, 2025.
