Unveiling "The Invincible Iron Man"
Following the release of X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge, Edwards began work on this ambitious project, initially titled "The Invincible Iron Man," a nod to the character's original comic book name. Edwards' Twitter posts included the game's title card, Genepool Software's logo, and gameplay screenshots. He further showcased original Xbox gameplay footage, featuring the game's startup screen and a desert-set tutorial segment.
Activision's Decision to Cancel
Despite positive fan reaction to the revealed material, Activision canceled "The Invincible Iron Man" shortly after development commenced. Genepool Software subsequently closed, leaving the team unemployed. While Activision never publicly explained the cancellation, Edwards offered several plausible theories, including potential delays of the related film, dissatisfaction with the game's quality, or perhaps another developer being chosen for the project.
A Unique Iron Man Design
Many commenters noted the stark difference between the game's Iron Man design and the later MCU portrayal by Robert Downey Jr. The game's design more closely resembled the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book version from the early 2000s. Edwards stated he was unaware of the reasoning behind this design choice. He promised to release more gameplay footage, though this has yet to materialize.
