Spectre Divide Backlash Prompts Skin Prices to Lower Soon After Launch

Mountaintop Studios, the developer behind the newly released FPS title Spectre Divide, swiftly addressed player concerns regarding exorbitant skin and bundle pricing. Just hours after launch, the studio announced significant price reductions and refunds.

Price Cuts and Refunds

Following considerable player backlash, Spectre Divide implemented a 17-25% price reduction on in-game weapons and character skins, a decision confirmed by game director Lee Horn. The studio issued a statement acknowledging player feedback and committing to the permanent price adjustments. Furthermore, players who purchased items before the price change will receive a 30% SP (in-game currency) refund, rounded up to the nearest 100 SP.

This refund also extends to those who bought Founder's or Supporter packs and subsequently purchased items with adjusted prices. However, the pricing for Starter packs, Sponsorships, and Endorsement upgrades remains unchanged.

Mixed Reactions and Steam Reviews

Despite the price adjustments and refunds, player reaction remains divided, mirroring the game's current "Mixed" rating on Steam (49% Negative at the time of writing). While some players appreciate the developer's responsiveness, others criticize the late implementation of the price changes and suggest further improvements, such as the ability to purchase individual items from bundles. Concerns about the game's long-term viability in a competitive free-to-play market also persist. The initial backlash included negative reviews on Steam, highlighting the impact of the pricing controversy on the game's reception.
