Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, has announced a complete shift in focus to its next, unannounced project. The studio has initiated a self-imposed "media blackout," indicating a period of limited public communication regarding its future endeavors.
While Baldur's Gate 3 players eagerly await Patch 8, slated for release later this year, Larian's leadership has confirmed that its full attention is dedicated to this new, undisclosed title. Swen Vincke, Larian's CEO, recently reflected on the studio's journey with Baldur's Gate 3's remarkable success, hinting at future developments while simultaneously expressing a desire to avoid a period of creative burnout.
Larian has confirmed that this next game will not be a Baldur's Gate sequel nor another Dungeons & Dragons adaptation. Instead, it represents a completely new intellectual property, a departure the studio felt compelled to make after internal discussions failed to generate sufficient enthusiasm for a direct Baldur's Gate 3 follow-up.
Previous statements from Vincke offer only cryptic hints about the nature of this new game. He has described it as a project pushing numerous boundaries and one that he personally finds very exciting. While a Divinity: Original Sin sequel has been mentioned as a possibility in the longer term, it's not currently the studio's immediate priority.
The lack of concrete information leaves much to speculation. Given Larian's history of crafting fantasy RPGs, the possibilities are vast. Could the studio venture into science fiction, contemporary settings, or even explore a completely different genre? It seems likely that significant time, potentially years, will pass before any substantial details are revealed.
