EA's Apex Legends: A Sixth Birthday and Plans for a 2.0 Reboot

As Apex Legends approaches its sixth anniversary, Electronic Arts (EA) has acknowledged the game's underperformance in terms of revenue, despite maintaining a substantial player base. While boasting over 200 million players and a strong core community, EA CEO Andrew Wilson stated that the game's financial trajectory hasn't met expectations. The company is actively addressing this by focusing on three key areas:

  • Community Support: Continued investment in quality-of-life improvements, anti-cheat measures, and new content creation to retain the tens of millions of daily active players. While progress has been made, EA admits it's not enough.

  • Apex Legends 2.0: A significant game update is in development, aiming to revitalize the franchise, attract new players, and boost revenue. This major overhaul is planned for release after the next Battlefield title, likely sometime in EA's 2027 fiscal year.

  • Long-Term Vision: EA envisions Apex Legends as a long-lasting franchise, comparable to its other successful titles. Further, more substantial updates beyond Apex Legends 2.0 are anticipated to maintain player engagement and expand the game's reach.

The planned Apex Legends 2.0 update bears resemblance to Activision's Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 reboot. While the success of that approach remains debated, EA will undoubtedly learn from its competitors' experiences in the battle royale market. Although Apex Legends remains a top-performing game on Steam, its concurrent player count is significantly below its peak, highlighting the need for revitalization. The future of Apex Legends hinges on the success of this planned 2.0 update and EA's long-term strategy for the franchise.
