Speaking to NintendoLife, Nintendo confirmed that the initial VRR details were inaccurate: "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR exclusively in handheld mode. This incorrect information originally appeared on our website, and we sincerely apologize for the error."
When asked about potential VRR support for docked mode via future firmware updates, Nintendo stated it has "no updates to share at this time."
This means while VRR will be available for portable play, TV-connected Switch 2 users won't enjoy this feature—at least for now.
The clarification comes after weeks of confusion, as observers first noted and documented the disappearing VRR mentions across various Nintendo sites, as highlighted by Digital Foundry's Oliver Mackenzie.
Although disappointing for those anticipating VRR support on TVs at launch, all may not be lost. Sony similarly added VRR to PS5 post-launch through a firmware update, suggesting Nintendo might follow suit.
In related Switch 2 developments, Nintendo recently announced performance-enhanced titles for the new system, including Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser assures consumers the company expects "sufficient holiday season stock" to meet demand.
