Valve Planning to Slow Down Deadlock Updates

Deadlock Update Schedule Shifting in 2025

Valve has announced a change in its update strategy for Deadlock in 2025, moving towards larger, less frequent patches. This shift follows a year of consistent bi-weekly updates in 2024. While this may disappoint some players expecting continuous content, Valve aims to improve its development process and allow more substantial changes to settle before releasing subsequent updates.

The recent winter update, featuring unique gameplay alterations, offers a glimpse into the future direction of Deadlock updates, hinting at larger-scale events and content drops. The shift to a less frequent release schedule means future updates will be more substantial and impactful, resembling major events rather than minor hotfixes.

Valve's free-to-play MOBA, Deadlock, launched on Steam in early 2024, quickly establishing itself in the competitive hero-shooter market alongside titles like Marvel Rivals. Its distinctive steampunk aesthetic and polished gameplay have contributed to its success. However, the decision to reduce update frequency reflects a strategic adjustment in development workflow.

According to PCGamesN, Valve developer Yoshi explained the reasoning behind the change on the official Deadlock Discord. The previous two-week update cycle proved challenging for internal iteration and didn't always allow sufficient time for external feedback. Future major patches will be less frequent but significantly larger, with hotfixes still deployed as needed.

The winter update provided a taste of this new approach. Expect to see more limited-time events and special game modes as Deadlock continues to evolve. Currently boasting 22 playable characters and an additional 8 in Hero Labs mode, Deadlock's unique anti-cheat measures and diverse character roster have already garnered significant praise. While an official release date remains unannounced, further Deadlock news is anticipated in 2025.
