Squad Busters celebrates its first anniversary with the launch of its major 2.0 update on May 13th. Since its 2024 release, the game has struggled to meet the developer's audience expectations. Will update 2.0 mark a turning point?
This Isn’t Just a Tweak or Two
Squad Busters 2.0 is a substantial reboot, as the name implies. The update completely transforms core gameplay, from battle mechanics to how victories are achieved.
The most significant shift involves heroes. You now select a primary Hero to lead your squad. If your Hero is defeated, the match is over.
Combat mechanics also receive a major overhaul. Attacking no longer requires you to stop moving, merging movement and fighting into a single, fluid action. This change creates faster, more aggressive, and chaotic matches.
The victory condition has been simplified: instead of eliminating every opponent, you only need to defeat the enemy Hero. Some players have noted this makes the game feel similar to a Brawl Stars variant with added complexity.
Squad Busters 2.0 Is Dumping a Lot of Old Features
Several game modes are being removed, including Doppelgangers, Double Trouble, Epic Overload, Loot Machines, and Hatchling Herder. Older skins and progression systems are also being retired, with players receiving compensation in Hero Points and other items.

Supercell's motivation for these rapid, sweeping changes is clear. Squad Busters has yet to achieve the massive popularity of titles like Clash of Clans or Brawl Stars.
With this foundational update and the first anniversary on May 29th, Supercell aims to re-engage the player base. A series of daily piñata events will launch soon as part of the celebration, offering chances to unlock the new Hero, Mortis.
