Jason Isaacs Suggests Unexpected Actor for Lucius Malfoy in HBO's Harry Potter Series

While Thailand is certainly a long way from the magical halls of Hogwarts, Jason Isaacs, known for his role as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films and currently starring in The White Lotus Season 3, has shared his unique perspective on who should step into his iconic shoes for HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series. In a recent interview with Variety, Isaacs suggested none other than Meryl Streep for the role. "She can do anything, that woman. There’s literally no limit to what she can do," he remarked, highlighting Streep's versatility. Notably, Streep has previously taken on male roles, including an elderly male rabbi in the HBO miniseries adaptation of the play Angels in America, showcasing her ability to transform into diverse characters.

Despite his recommendation, Isaacs humorously stated he has no advice for Streep or any other actor who might take on the role of Lucius Malfoy. "I wouldn’t have any advice at all. Why would I bother?" he quipped, expressing confidence in the new cast. "I know some of the people they’re casting already. They’re brilliant actors. It’s going to be fantastic, and the last thing they need is advice from some old fart like me."

Isaacs first brought Lucius Malfoy to life in the second Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and continued to portray the character through to the final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. As for the upcoming TV adaptation, only one casting has been confirmed at the time of this writing: John Lithgow will take on the role of Albus Dumbledore, a character previously played by Richard Harris and then Michael Gambon.

Rumors are swirling about other potential castings. Black Mirror star Paapa Essiedu is reportedly in discussions to play Severus Snape, originally portrayed by Alan Rickman, while Jessica Jones actress Janet McTeer is said to be close to being cast as Minerva McGonagall, a role famously played by Maggie Smith. However, these casting choices have yet to be officially confirmed.
