Hyper Light Breaker: Master Lock-On Techniques

Authore: SavannahUpdate:Feb 22,2025

This guide explains Hyper Light Breaker's targeting mechanic and offers advice on when to use it. The lock-on system is crucial but shouldn't be used constantly.

How to Target Enemies

To lock onto an enemy, center your view on them and press the right analog stick (R3). The game will automatically select the closest target unless it's surrounded by others. A reticle will appear, and the camera will zoom slightly.

Line of sight isn't required; the enemy just needs to be visible and within range. Locking on changes character movement, making you circle the target. Fast-moving enemies can make the camera spin rapidly, potentially altering your movement inputs.

To switch targets while locked on, use the right analog stick to select the nearest enemy in range. To cancel the lock-on and return to free camera, press the right analog stick again (or use the alternative binding in the settings). The lock-on will also automatically disengage if you move too far from the target.

When to Lock On vs. Free Camera

Locking on is beneficial in one-on-one fights, especially against bosses or strong (yellow health bar) enemies, after eliminating other mobs. The focused camera leaves you vulnerable to attacks from unseen enemies.

Free camera is generally better. Against multiple enemies or easily defeated foes, locking on hinders your situational awareness.

Against mini-bosses or bosses, lock on once all other enemies are dead to keep them centered. Cancel the lock-on if more enemies appear, then re-engage once they're eliminated.

During Extraction, for instance, use free camera until all regular enemies are defeated before locking onto the mini-boss for a focused attack.
