Alex Garland, director of the highly anticipated Elden Ring Movie, has completed seven full playthroughs of FromSoftware's acclaimed fantasy RPG and recently shared which boss battle proved most challenging for him.
In an interview with IGN ahead of the release of "28 Years Later" - his zombie apocalypse sequel arriving 23 years after the original - the filmmaker behind "Ex Machina" and "Civil War" identified Malenia, Blade of Miquella as Elden Ring's toughest opponent.
"Malenia remains the ultimate challenge," Garland revealed. "Currently on my seventh playthrough, I've leveled up significantly with powerful gear, but still find myself relentlessly throwing attempts at her."
"This persistence strategy honed during my Dark Souls days still applies," he continued. "Mastery isn't the goal - it's about the law of averages. Repeated attempts eventually lead to victory."
Interestingly, Garland found Starscourge Radahn comparatively straightforward, offering his personal tactics for defeating the gravity-wielding warrior.
"Radahn presents surprisingly manageable difficulty," Garland noted. "By activating available combat allies who significantly weaken him first, the battle becomes about strategically utilizing those scattered summon signs."
While speculation continues about possible boss appearances in A24's Elden Ring adaptation, Garland remains tight-lipped about production details. The film collaboration between Garland, publisher Bandai Namco, and A24 includes George R.R. Martin and Vince Gerardis as producers, alongside DNA's Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, and Allon Reich. FromSoftware's level of involvement remains unconfirmed.
What narrative direction should the Elden Ring film pursue? Many fans speculate a Shattering-era prequel might prove more compelling than directly adapting the game's journey. Share your creative visions in the comments below!
