Ed Boon, creative director of Mortal Kombat 1, has shared an early look at upcoming guest fighter T-1000 Terminator's brutal Fatality while hinting at potential additional DLC content.
Truck Terror Fatality Revealed
Celebrating Conan the Barbarian's release as DLC, Boon announced Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million sales globally. He followed this milestone with gameplay footage showing one of T-1000's signature Fatalities - a brutal callback to Terminator 2's legendary highway chase sequence.
The clip depicts the liquid metal assassin recreating T2's iconic scene by violently ramming an opponent with a wrecked semi-truck, instantly triggering nostalgic flashbacks for Terminator fans.
"Keep Trucking Forward"
Boon's caption accompanying the footage - "We are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC" - has sparked intense speculation within the MK community. While likely referencing the imminent T-1000 release scheduled for February, many fans interpret this as confirmation of post-Khaos Reigns support.
The T-1000 completes the Khaos Reigns expansion roster following Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan. This has left players wondering whether NetherRealm plans additional Kombat Packs or if development focus will shift to their next project.
Warner Bros.' Continued Support
Publisher Warner Bros. Discovery maintains strong faith in the franchise, with CEO David Zaslav recently identifying Mortal Kombat as one of four core gaming IPs receiving concentrated investment.
Boon reconfirmed NetherRealm's long-term commitment to Mortal Kombat 1 support while acknowledging they've had their next project planned since 2022. The studio's alternating Mortal Kombat/Injustice release pattern broke with MK1's launch following MK11.
The Injustice Question
Speaking to IGN in 2023, Boon cited multiple factors behind revisiting Mortal Kombat, including their Unreal Engine 4 transition and COVID-19 pandemic precautions. He reassured fans this doesn't mark the end for Injustice, stating: "Not at all" when asked about the DC fighter's future.
With NetherRealm historically alternating between franchises, many anticipate Injustice 3 may follow MK1's support cycle - though neither Warner Bros. nor NetherRealm have confirmed development.
