Baldur\'s Gate 3: Should You Free Orpheus?

Authore: ChristianUpdate:Jan 02,2025

In Baldur's Gate 3's climactic moment, players face a pivotal choice: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allow the Emperor to handle the situation. This decision, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, profoundly impacts the game's outcome.

Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this choice, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, exploring Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This final decision carries significant weight, potentially leading to companion sacrifices. High skill checks (30+) might be necessary to influence companion decisions.

Spoiler Warning: The following discusses the game's ending.

Freeing Orpheus or Siding with the Emperor?

This choice hinges on player priorities. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).

After the Netherbrain battle (which the Emperor teleports the party to after a loss), the choice is presented: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

Siding with the Emperor: This results in Orpheus's demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may object, impacting their personal quests. While granting victory over the Netherbrain, this outcome might displease players attached to these characters.

Freeing Orpheus: This leads the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight against the Netherbrain, aided by the Githyanki. He'll even selflessly become a Mind Flayer to save his people if asked.

In short: Choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; choose Orpheus if you accept that risk for your companions. The Emperor's path might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus.

The Moral High Ground?

Morality depends on individual perspectives, but loyalty is key. Orpheus, as a Githyanki descendant, is the rightful ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's demands might seem overly forceful to others. The Gith prioritize self-preservation above all else.

The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices, however. Following his plan might lead to becoming a Mind Flayer, but it's a morally upright path. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings, potentially allowing for a satisfying resolution for everyone.
