Naughty Dog Unlikely Developing The Last of Us 3

In recent years, online discussions have frequently centered on the potential for a sequel to The Last of Us. Despite the polarized reaction to the second game, many fans held out hope that Naughty Dog would improve upon its perceived flaws in The Last of Us Part III or deliver a fresh expansion of the universe via a spin-off title. However, Neil Druckmann recently made a statement that caught even the franchise's most dedicated followers off guard.

The head of Naughty Dog, alongside screenwriter Craig Mazin, participated in a joint interview discussing the adaptation of the studio's game series, as well as the games themselves. Druckmann, in particular, opened up about his emotional state following the sequel's release during the COVID-19 pandemic. He described feeling unwell at the time, becoming preoccupied with various issues, and noted how his mental state deteriorated when left alone with his thoughts—especially with ready internet access. It was during these moments, the developer admitted, that things felt their worst, as he scoured reviews and debates about his game and started to wonder if he had truly created a disappointment that ruined the series' legacy.

When questioned about the possibility of a third installment, Druckmann let out a sigh and acknowledged he had anticipated the question. Still, the only response he could offer was that people should not expect a new The Last of Us game, hinting that this could very well be the conclusion.
