This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles boasting diverse game selections. However, I've saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's inaugural console exceeded all expectations, amassing a phenomenal game library, with re-releases still prevalent today. While these titles initially challenged Nintendo, everyone now benefits from their availability across various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order). Let the PlaySta-Show begin!
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa, a deserving yet underappreciated gem, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Play as a charming floppy-eared cat-creature navigating the dream world to thwart a perilous threat. Expect vibrant visuals, engaging gameplay, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, the pair are essential.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the Western RPG market, becoming Square Enix's crowning achievement and propelling the PlayStation to the forefront. While the remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. While later entries delved into increasingly bizarre territory, the original remains a standout, offering a thrilling, GI Joe-esque adventure. Its engaging gameplay is a key factor in its success, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
Let's explore a niche classic. G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's shoot 'em up series into 3D. While the polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, their charm remains intact. The vibrant colors, unique enemy capture mechanic, and inventive bosses create a compelling shooter experience.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
To avoid over-representation of Square Enix titles, I'll limit it to this and Final Fantasy VII. Chrono Cross, tasked with following one of the most beloved JRPGs, falls short of Chrono Trigger's legacy. However, viewed independently, it offers a clever, visually stunning RPG with a large (though admittedly underdeveloped) cast of characters and an unforgettable soundtrack.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
While I appreciate most Mega Man games, objectivity dictates a more discerning recommendation. For the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 stand out. X4 boasts superior cohesion compared to its predecessors. The Legacy Collections allow for personal judgment.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
Many PlayStation first-party titles weren't actually owned by Sony. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with polished action. Created by the Ghosts ‘n Goblins mastermind, its initial accessibility belies its later challenges.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia stands out with its cheerful adventure and satisfying combat system, building upon Game Arts' Lunar legacy.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
A PlayStation icon, Lara Croft starred in five PlayStation adventures. While quality varied, the original, emphasizing tomb raiding over action, is arguably the strongest. This collection lets you decide.
moon ($18.99)
A deeper cut, moon, initially Japan-only, deconstructs the typical RPG. More of an adventure game, its "punk" aesthetic and unconventional approach may not appeal to all, but its unique message is worth exploring.
This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch in the comments! Thank you for reading!
