Application Description

Noir: High-Quality USB Camera Viewer & HDMI Display

Transform your mobile device into a versatile display for cameras, gaming consoles, laptops, PCs, and more! This app requires an HDMI to USB-C dongle (a UVC capture device or video capture card—not a USB-C hub or USB-C to HDMI cable) to function. It also supports cameras, endoscopes, and microscopes with USB streaming capabilities.

Noir leverages UVC video and UAC audio streaming, providing OpenGL ES and Vulkan graphics backend options. The free version offers core functionality and an immersive experience (with ads, but not in the preview). Upgrade to the pro version for enhanced features and continued support.

Key Applications:

  1. Camera Monitoring: Pro features include LUTs, histograms, and edge detection.
  2. Primary Gaming Monitor: Pro features: visual effects, brightness/contrast adjustments, per-app volume control, and FSR 1.0.
  3. Secondary Laptop Display: Extend your workspace seamlessly.
  4. Broad Compatibility: Works with any device featuring HDMI output or USB streaming.

Recommended Capture Cards:

Pro Version Exclusives:

  1. Ad-free experience with no tracking.
  2. Visual effects for enhanced visuals.
  3. Picture-in-picture mode for multitasking.
  4. Precise brightness and contrast control.
  5. Fullscreen stretching for optimal viewing.
  6. 3D LUTs for advanced color grading.
  7. App-specific volume control for fine-tuned audio.
  8. Luminance and color histograms for detailed analysis.
  9. Edge detection for sharper image definition.
  10. FSR 1.0 for upscaling and improved image quality.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Device Recognition Issues: Ensure your device supports USB Host (OTG) and that you're using a video capture card, not just a hub. Insufficient power might require a powered USB hub.

  2. Laggy Preview: Check your USB version and cabling. For USB 3.0, ensure both the card and port are USB 3.0. For USB 2.0, use MJPEG format and stick to 1080p30fps (some cards support 1080p50fps).

  3. Sudden Connection Failures: Restart your device.

  4. Black Screen (Gaming Consoles): Disable HDCP in your console's settings (Settings -> System -> HDMI). Note: PS3 doesn't support HDCP disabling. HDCP may also activate during video playback on other devices. (Using an HDMI splitter to bypass HDCP is possible but not recommended.)

  5. Unsupported Aspect Ratios: Most capture cards only support 16:9 and 4:3. Noir's stretch feature can help, but requires EDID support from your capture card and matching output resolution settings on your source device.
