Wizards & Witches Farewell: Harry Potter: Magic Awakened Server Closure

NetEase's collectible card game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in select regions. The end-of-service (EOS) announcement impacts the Americas, Europe, and Oceania, with servers ceasing operation on October 29th, 2024. Players in Asia and certain MENA regions can continue playing.

Initially released in China in September 2021, the game saw a strong start, followed by global pre-registrations in February 2022. However, delays hampered its worldwide launch on June 27th, 2022, impacting its initial momentum.

The game's demise, despite its Clash Royale-inspired wizarding gameplay and initial positive reception, is attributed to several factors. Reddit discussions highlight player frustration over a shift towards a pay-to-win model. Reworks to the reward system negatively impacted skilled free-to-play players, slowing progression and diminishing the appeal for many.

The game has already been removed from app stores in affected regions (August 26th, 2024). Those in unaffected regions can still experience the Hogwarts atmosphere, including dorm life, classes, secrets, and wizard duels.
