If you stick with your starting class, that's perfectly okay as it's one of the most versatile options available in the game.

Our Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition classes guide highlights the five best classes in the game and explains why they're worth considering.
Drifter
Xenoblade Chronicles X encourages you to move on from the Drifter class once you reach rank 10, but this starting class remains highly versatile and useful throughout the entire game. For fans of the original Xenoblade Chronicles, Drifter can be thought of as a Shulk-like class, though with a more limited skill set. This class provides access to a range of debuff and offensive arts, including skills that can stagger and topple enemies, as well as one that regenerates health, reducing your reliance on party members for healing.
Drifter wields assault rifles for potent ranged damage and knives for strong melee attacks, making it adaptable to various combat scenarios. Moreover, Drifter boasts the highest number of skill slots of any class in the game. Even if you experiment with other classes to master new skills, it's beneficial to return to Drifter to customize it according to your playstyle.
Full Metal Jaguar
Full Metal Jaguar, Elma's class, is a high-risk, high-reward choice. It boosts your critical hit rate when your HP drops below 50 percent, and one skill ensures you're often in that critical state by reducing your health upon attacking. The Ghost Factory skill allows allies to evade incoming attacks, while Electric Surge enables you to deal ether damage—an uncommon trait among melee classes. Even the basic skill, Shadowstrike, packs a punch, making Full Metal Jaguar a thrilling class to master.
Duelist
Duelist excels as a self-sufficient attacker adept in both close-range and ranged combat. They wield a longsword and an assault rifle, an enhanced version of the Drifter's weapon setup, and have access to a variety of useful skills. The Last Stand skill uses your TP to boost the party's TP, ensuring your teammates can unleash powerful attacks when needed.
Soul of the Samurai enhances the Duelist's basic attacks with area-of-effect properties, and True Stream Edge restores TP when your morale level is above one. However, Blossom Dance stands out as one of the best skills in the game, staggering enemies and setting them up for toppling while ignoring their resistances, making it incredibly useful against most foes.
Mastermind
If you prefer manipulating enemy behavior over dealing massive damage, Mastermind is an excellent choice. While its arts may not be as potent as those of the Duelist, they can significantly ease prolonged battles against formidable opponents. Mastermind can remove enemy buffs and, at level seven, learns a skill that reduces enemy debuff resistance upon landing an attack. Additionally, it has abilities that boost TP and a capstone art that inflicts the virus effect on enemies. Mastering this class requires heightened battle awareness, but the payoff is well worth it.
Galactic Knight
While it's often thought that Galactic Knight is best suited for Skell users, this class offers significant advantages even outside of giant fighting robots. Galactic Knights can remove debuffs and heal allies while dealing heavy, specialized damage. They can also reduce their own cooldowns by executing melee combos. Additionally, their Skell-specific abilities restore appendage HP and directly increase combat power without any prerequisites, making Galactic Knight a versatile and powerful class.
