New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The eagerly anticipated Switch 2 introduces groundbreaking features for its Joy-Con controllers, notably including mouse support. On February 6, 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a patent filed by Nintendo, detailing the new functionalities of the Switch 2's Joy-Con.

This publication sheds light on the advanced capabilities of the new controller, emphasizing its mouse-like features. The concept of the Joy-Con functioning as a mouse was hinted at in the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which showcased the controller being maneuvered across a flat surface, suggesting its potential use as a mouse.

The patent solidifies the rumors surrounding the new Joy-Con, as Nintendo has remained silent on specifics related to the Switch 2.

Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers

The Joy-Con for the Switch 2 maintains the detachable design familiar from the original Nintendo Switch, where both Joy-Cons can be separated from the console's main body. The standout feature, as highlighted in the patent, is the Joy-Con's ability to operate as a mouse.

According to the publication, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."

The Joy-Cons can be charged using a new docking station, capable of charging up to two Joy-Cons simultaneously. Additionally, a new magnetic attachment connects the Joy-Con to the console, featuring a wrist strap akin to those on the original Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons.

The patent also introduces a new pair of controllers resembling a standard controller split in half, each equipped with an optical sensor and capable of functioning as a mouse. A separate attachment allows these controllers to be combined into a traditional controller setup.

It's important to note that the features outlined in the patent may not reflect the final product for the Switch 2, as Nintendo has yet to make official announcements regarding the Joy-Con's capabilities or any other related accessories.

Nintendo Direct For Switch 2

The event is set to stream on April 2, 2025, at 6 AM PT and 9 AM ET across all official Nintendo social media platforms.
