This week's Steam Deck Weekly is here! If you missed my Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 review, check it out here. This edition dives into my recent Steam Deck gaming experiences, featuring reviews and impressions of several Verified and Playable titles, plus a spotlight on current sales.

Steam Deck Game Reviews & Impressions

NBA 2K25 Steam Deck Review

Despite the yearly release cycle skepticism, I've always enjoyed 2K's NBA games. NBA 2K25 stands out for two key reasons: it's the first PC version since the PS5 launch to offer the true "Next Gen" experience, and the official PC FAQ confirms Steam Deck optimization. While lacking official Valve verification, the Deck performance is excellent, though with some expected minor drawbacks.

Longtime PC players will appreciate the inclusion of ProPLAY technology (previously exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series X) for enhanced gameplay, and the PC debut of WNBA and MyNBA modes. If you've held off on recent PC 2K titles, NBA 2K25 delivers the complete package. I hope its success encourages continued Next Gen PC releases and dedicated Steam Deck support from 2K.

The PC and Steam Deck versions boast 16:10 and 800p support. AMD FSR 2, DLSS, and XeSS are also available, but I disabled them (explained later). You can adjust v-sync, a dynamic v-sync targeting 90fps during gameplay and 45fps otherwise, HDR (Steam Deck compatible!), texture detail, overall quality, and shader options. Initial shader caching is recommended for optimal gameplay, though the game does a quick, albeit noticeable, cache on each boot.

The advanced graphics menu offers extensive customization, including shader, shadow, player, and crowd detail, NPC density, and various effects. I opted for mostly low or medium settings, disabling upscaling for better clarity. Capping the framerate to 60fps at 60hz via the Steam Deck quick access menu provided the best stability and visual sharpness.

The default Steam Deck preset, while functional, appeared too blurry for my preference, prompting my manual adjustments.

Offline play is partially supported. While some modes require online access (MyCAREER and MyTEAM), quick play and eras function offline, with noticeably faster loading times.

Technically, the console versions surpass the Steam Deck experience, but the portability factor makes the Deck my preferred platform. Loading times are slower on the Deck, even with an OLED's internal SSD, but still acceptable. Note that there's no cross-play between PC and consoles.

Microtransactions remain a persistent issue, significantly impacting certain game modes. If you prioritize gameplay and visuals, they're less of a concern, but remember the $69.99 price tag.

NBA 2K25 delivers a fantastic portable basketball experience on the Steam Deck, matching the PS5 and Xbox Series X feature set. With minor adjustments, it looks and runs great. 2K has finally brought the full experience to PC after years of waiting. Steam Deck owners looking for a solid NBA 2K experience will be pleased, but be mindful of the microtransactions.

NBA 2K25 Steam Deck review score: 4/5

Gimmick! 2 Steam Deck Impressions

For those unfamiliar with Gimmick! 2, read Shaun's Switch review here. My Steam Deck experience was positive; while not yet Valve-tested, it runs flawlessly. The latest patch even includes Steam Deck and Linux fixes.

The game is capped at 60fps on the Steam Deck; forcing your Deck screen to 60hz (especially on OLED) is recommended to avoid jitter. While lacking graphical options, it natively supports 16:10 for menus. At 1080p, the 16:10 aspect ratio is correctly maintained in the menus, though gameplay remains at 16:9.

The 60fps cap isn't a major drawback. Given its smooth out-of-the-box performance, Steam Deck verification seems likely. I concur with Shaun's positive assessment of the game itself.

Arco Steam Deck Mini Review

Arco, a dynamic turn-based RPG with pixel art and a compelling narrative, launched recently on PC and Switch. The Steam version, which is currently more up-to-date, is the focus of this review.

Beyond its appealing visuals, Arco boasts a unique combat system blending real-time and turn-based elements. The audio and story were particularly impressive. Each character offers a distinct gameplay style within the narrative.

Steam Deck compatibility is excellent (Verified), with a consistent 60fps and 16:9 support. The Steam version includes a beta assist mode (skip combat, infinite dynamite, etc.), and a welcome option to skip the first act on replays.

Arco exceeded expectations, offering dynamic gameplay, superb visuals and music, and a memorable story. Highly recommended for fans of tactical RPGs with engaging narratives. A free demo is available on Steam.

Arco Steam Deck review score: 5/5

Skull and Bones Steam Deck Mini Review

Skull and Bones, released earlier this year on other platforms, recently arrived on Steam. This review focuses primarily on the Steam Deck port. Ubisoft's confirmation of Deck playability proved accurate.

Officially rated "Playable" by Valve, the game requires a (somewhat sluggish) Ubisoft Connect login. The tutorial runs smoothly, but for optimal performance, I set a 30fps limit at 16:10 and 800p, using FSR 2 quality upscaling (performance mode is more stable). Other settings were set to low, except for textures (high).

My initial impressions of the game itself are positive, showing potential with continued support.

While not a full-price recommendation yet, the free trial is worthwhile. Fans of naval combat and open-world Ubisoft games will find much to appreciate, but further improvements are possible. Note that it's online-only. I plan to acquire the console version for cross-progression.

ODDADA Steam Deck Review

I enjoy interactive creative tools like Townscaper. ODDADA fits this niche perfectly, with a minor control caveat.

ODDADA is a unique music-making experience with a game-like structure. Its aesthetic is captivating, providing a versatile toolbox for musical creation. Interaction is via mouse or touch controls on the Steam Deck. The random elements ensure unique creations.

The game runs perfectly at 90fps, offering resolution, v-sync, and anti-aliasing options. Menu text is somewhat small on the Steam Deck.

The lack of controller support is the only drawback, though touch or mouse control might be preferable regardless.

Highly recommended for music and art enthusiasts. While currently lacking controller support, touch controls work flawlessly. Steam Deck verification is in progress.

ODDADA Steam Deck review score: 4.5/5

Star Trucker Steam Deck Mini Review

Star Trucker blends automobile simulation and space exploration, potentially appealing to neither genre's core fans, but possibly attracting a new audience. It runs well on Proton Experimental.

The goal is to explore space, complete jobs, earn money, and unlock content. Difficulty options and customization are available. The visuals, writing, and radio banter are highlights.

Extensive graphical options are available, including 16:10 support. I used a custom preset with low shadows and normal settings for other options, achieving around 40fps. The controls require some adjustment.

The unique blend of truck simulation and space setting is compelling. While not universally appealing, I enjoyed the gameplay loop. Further optimization for the Steam Deck would be beneficial.

Star Trucker Steam Deck review score: 4/5

DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia Steam Deck Mini Review

Originally a PS4 exclusive in Japan, DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia's Western release is on Steam. It's a great sequel to DATE A LIVE: Rio Reincarnation.

Following Shido's dream about Ren, the story unfolds with multiple paths and returning characters. The art is excellent, and the tone is lighter than its predecessor. A perfect complement to Rio Reincarnation.

Runs flawlessly on the Steam Deck at 720p and 16:9, with smooth cutscenes. Check system settings to ensure the confirm button is set to A and the aspect ratio is correct.

Highly recommended for fans of Rio Reincarnation, but playing that first is advised.

DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia Steam Deck Review Score: 4/5

Total War: PHARAOH DYNASTIES Steam Deck Review Impressions

Total War: PHARAOH DYNASTIES is a significant update/re-release of the original. It nearly doubles the campaign content, adds four factions, the Dynasty system, and numerous improvements. If you own the original, this feels like a sequel and enhanced re-release.

While lacking controller support on the Steam Deck, it's playable with trackpad and touch controls. Initial impressions are positive.

Pinball FX Steam Deck Impressions

I finally explored Zen Studios' Pinball FX on a handheld. The PC port offers many features, including HDR support on the Steam Deck. My experience with several tables was very positive.

The game is a great pinball experience, and the free-to-play version allows sampling before purchasing DLC.

New Steam Deck Verified & Playable Games

Notable additions include Hookah Haze and OneShot: World Machine Edition (Verified). Black Myth: Wukong's "Unsupported" status is surprising given its performance.
