The upcoming Monopoly movie, a project from Lionsgate based on Hasbro's iconic board game, has recently announced that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will take on the role of screenwriters. This duo, known for their work on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, brings a wealth of experience to the table, having also written and directed the original film Mayday, as well as contributing to scripts for The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The film will be produced by Margot Robbie through her production company, LuckyChap, adding another layer of star power and creative vision to the project. The announcement marks a fresh start for the Monopoly movie, which has seen numerous attempts over the years to bring it to the screen.
Previous efforts to adapt Monopoly into a film date back to 2007 when Ridley Scott showed interest in directing. In 2011, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski were tapped to write the script, but the project did not move forward. Another attempt in 2015 saw Lionsgate and Hasbro teaming up with Andrew Niccol as the writer, and by 2019, actor Kevin Hart and director Tim Story were set to be involved. However, none of these iterations came to fruition.
The current momentum for the Monopoly film was sparked by Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro, which has reinvigorated efforts to bring this classic game to life on the big screen. With Daley and Goldstein at the helm of the screenplay, fans of the game and cinema alike are hopeful that this version will successfully "pass Go" and deliver an entertaining adaptation.
