The popular game Marvel Rivals has found itself at the center of controversy after receiving over 500 mods in a single month. Tensions flared when Nexus Mods, a well-known modding platform, decided to remove modifications that replaced Captain America's head with images of Joe Biden and Donald Trump. This decision stirred up strong emotions among the user base.
The owner of Nexus Mods, who goes by the pseudonym TheDarkOne, addressed the situation in a private discussion on Reddit. He explained that the mods featuring both Trump and Biden were taken down simultaneously to prevent any accusations of political bias. "We removed the Biden mod on the same day as the Trump mod to avoid bias. But for some reason, YouTube bloggers are silent about it," TheDarkOne stated, highlighting what he perceives as selective coverage by content creators.
However, the fallout from this decision didn't end with the mods' removal. TheDarkOne revealed that he started receiving threats following the action. "Today we write death threats, call us pedophiles, and all sorts of insults just because someone decided to stir up this topic," he added, expressing frustration over the intense backlash.
This incident is not the first time Nexus Mods has faced controversy over mod removals. In 2022, the platform removed a mod for Spider-Man Remastered that swapped rainbow flags for American flags. At the time, the site's owners made it clear that they supported inclusivity and would remove content that went against their stance on diversity.
In concluding remarks, TheDarkOne expressed a firm stance on the matter: "We're not going to waste our time on people who think this is cause for uproar."
