Once upon a time, the organized crime subgenre was an absolute goldmine for mobile developers and publishers. Let's not forget the golden era of Mafia City and its relentless phonk-infused advertisements on YouTube. But has that rush for gold finally come to an end? IGG certainly doesn't seem to think so with the launch of Mafia Mobile for iOS and Android!
As mentioned in my earlier coverage, Mafia Mobile presents itself as a solid contender within the mobile strategy genre. You'll discover all the necessary elements, from recruiting heroes to leading your organization, launching new ventures, and managing them—whether they are legitimate businesses or not.
Of course, Mafia Mobile introduces several additional mechanics, such as club management and RPG-style battles. So it's far more than just a glorified Facebook experience. Regarding visuals and presentation, the game does a commendable job of distinguishing itself from its competitors in the crowded market.
Sleeping with the fishes
Naturally, success ultimately depends on whether players are willing to give it a try. Personally, I find it somewhat hard to get too excited about Mafia Mobile. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, but I can't shake the feeling that we've seen this formula many times before.
With so many major releases hitting the market constantly (heck, our weekly feature on the top five new mobile games to try is proof enough), you really need a standout gimmick or selling point to grab attention. That's something I feel Mafia Mobile lacks, although I'll have to wait and see how players like yourself respond before making a final judgment.
