The beloved Suikoden series is making a comeback, albeit in a different form. Konami, in collaboration with MYTHRIL, has unveiled Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG set to launch on Android and iOS. This exciting addition to the franchise will be free to play, though a specific release date hasn't been announced yet. Fans can expect it to hit the app stores later this year.
For those unfamiliar, Suikoden, which debuted in 1995, is a legendary RPG series developed and published by Konami. Masterminded by Yoshitaka Murayama, the series draws inspiration from the classic Chinese novel "Water Margin," known as Suikoden in Japanese. The saga is renowned for its intricate plots involving political intrigue, the mystical True Runes, and the iconic 108 Stars of Destiny. With a total of 11 entries, including various spin-offs, the last release was back in 2012. Instead of a direct sequel or a full-scale revival, Konami is introducing Suikoden STAR LEAP, a mobile game.
What’s in Store?
Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh lineup of characters while preserving the series' signature element of assembling 108 heroes. The game retains the classic Suikoden aesthetic with its pixel art style, which you can preview in the teaser trailer below.
The narrative centers around the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes pivotal to the world's creation. The story follows Hou, the son of a village chief, who, after his first successful hunt, sees his village devastated by an attack. Driven by this tragedy, Hou embarks on a quest to restore peace alongside Hisui, Shirin, and Shapur. Hisui, Hou's servant, harbors a mysterious emotional suppression; Shirin, his childhood friend, is driven by a strong sense of justice; and Shapur, once a general, now serves as a butler.
Despite the excitement, some fans remain skeptical. The Suikoden community has long awaited a proper continuation of the series, and instead, they are presented with Suikoden STAR LEAP, which adopts a gacha game model.
We'll have a clearer picture once the game is released. In the meantime, keep an eye on the official website for the latest updates.
