Insomniac Games Eyes More Game-to-Screen Adaptations Following CEO's Retirement
Insomniac Games, renowned for the Ratchet & Clank franchise, has expressed strong interest in further adapting its games for film and television. This revelation emerged from an interview with co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider in Variety, following the announcement of founder and CEO Ted Price's retirement.
Schneider highlighted the studio's experience with the 2016 Ratchet & Clank movie, stating, "We kind of got an early start on that. So, of course, we’re interested in that kind of thing. We love Ratchet and Clank in particular." While the 2016 film received mixed reviews, Insomniac's confidence stems from Sony's recent successes in game adaptations, particularly the critically acclaimed The Last of Us series. Since Sony acquired Insomniac in 2019, a collaborative approach to future projects seems likely.
Sony's Expanding Game Adaptation Portfolio
Insomniac's enthusiasm aligns with Sony's proven track record in adapting its game properties. Recent successes include the 2022 Uncharted film and the 2023 The Last of Us series. Further bolstering this commitment, Sony's CES 2025 press conference announced several upcoming projects:
- The Last of Us Season 2 (HBO, April 2025)
- Until Dawn live-action film (April 2025)
- Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime series (Crunchyroll, 2027)
- Helldivers feature film (release date unannounced)
- Horizon Zero Dawn live-action film (release date unannounced)
Insomniac Founder Ted Price Retires After 30 Years
The interview also coincided with the announcement of Ted Price's retirement after 30 years at the helm of Insomniac Games, the studio behind iconic franchises like Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel's Spider-Man. Price cited the need for new leadership to guide the studio's continued success, stating, "For me, after over 30 years of leading Insomniac, I felt it was simply time to step aside and let others pave the way for our team."
Three long-time Insomniac veterans—Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang—will now lead the studio as co-Studio Heads. Price expressed confidence in their ability to maintain the studio's culture and success.
