In an exciting revelation at Gamescom, Mortal Kombat co-founder Ed Boon discussed how Mortal Kombat 1 (MK1) will differentiate the gameplay of two highly anticipated characters: Homelander and Omni-Man. Addressing fans' concerns about potential similarities in combat styles, Boon assured that the development team at NetherRealm Studios is taking a unique approach to ensure each character feels distinct and engaging.
During an interview with IGN, Boon emphasized the creative freedom the team has with these characters. He stated, "Obviously, we could do anything with the characters, but I don’t think we’re going to have both Homelander and Omni-Man have heat vision or something like that." This statement underlines NetherRealm's intention to avoid duplicating Superman-esque abilities, thereby crafting unique identities for both heroes.
Boon further elaborated on how the team has drawn inspiration from the characters' actions in their respective shows to develop their Fatalities. He noted, "They’re definitely going to play differently. The main attacks are going to really differentiate them, but we’re definitely aware of the assumption that some people were making on, ‘Oh, they’re just going to be the same characters.'" This approach promises to deliver a fresh and exciting experience for players, ensuring that Homelander and Omni-Man stand out as individual fighters within the MK1 roster.
