God of War Live Action Series Reboots As Well

God of War Show Not Canceled

God of War TV Series' Creative Team Undergoes Overhaul

The much-anticipated God of War live-action TV series is undergoing a significant reboot, following the departure of key creative figures. Showrunner Rafe Judkins, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, have exited the project, despite having developed multiple scripts. This change in direction comes as Sony and Amazon have opted to take the series in a new creative path.

Despite the shake-up, the involvement of Santa Monica Studio's Creative Director, Cory Barlog, remains strong as he continues in his role as an executive producer. Alongside him, PlayStation Production's Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Vertigo's Roy Lee, and Santa Monica Studio's Yumi Yang will also stay on as executive producers. Amazon and Sony are now on the hunt for a new showrunner and a fresh team of producers and writers to steer the project in an exciting new direction, confirming that the series will not be canceled but rather reimagined.

More to Come, Despite the Delays

God of War TV Series' Creative Team Undergoes Overhaul

The collaboration between Amazon and Sony for the God of War TV adaptation was first announced on a PlayStation podcast in 2022, spurred by the success of the 2018 game reboot. This move is part of Sony's broader strategy to bring their critically acclaimed video game franchises to the screen, leading to the establishment of PlayStation Productions in 2019. Alongside the God of War project, Sony announced a TV adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn with Netflix, and hinted at more adaptations from beloved older franchises.

Sony's foray into film and TV has already borne fruit with the release of Uncharted in 2022 and the highly successful The Last of Us TV series in 2023, which is set to return for a second season in 2025. Other recent releases include the Gran Turismo film in 2023 and the Twisted Metal TV series this year. Looking ahead, Sony has lined up projects like Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the upcoming Until Dawn film, slated for release on April 25, 2025.
