Gaming Mouse Sparks Fire, Nearly Burns Down Apartment

Authore: GabrielUpdate:Apr 26,2025

Imagine waking up to the smell of smoke, only to find your gaming mouse engulfed in flames. This shocking reality was faced by Reddit user lommelinn, who narrowly escaped a potential disaster when their Gigabyte M6880X mouse caught fire while their PC was in sleep mode. The incident, which could have "burned down" their apartment, left the room filled with black smoke and covered in soot, impacting even their modular synth.

The Gigabyte M6880X is an older wired optical mouse, powered via USB 2.0 with a standard 5V at 0.5A, making the catastrophic failure all the more perplexing. Images shared by lommelinn show the top rear panel of the mouse completely melted, while the underside remained relatively unscathed. The damage extended to the user's desk and mousepad, highlighting the severity of the incident.
