If you're a fan of thatgamecompany's Sky: Children of the Light, you'll be thrilled to know about their latest venture into storytelling. The game, already cherished for its stunning art style, presentation, and narrative, is now set to premiere its first-ever in-game animated feature, "The Two Embers," beginning with Part One on July 21st. This silent animated feature will delve into the origin story of Sky, offering a unique cinematic experience within the game itself.
The Story of The Two Embers
"The Two Embers" unfolds in two parts, with Part One focusing on the intertwined journeys of two children separated by time. The narrative begins with a young orphan living on the fringes of The Ruler's City, a once-thriving metropolis now in decline. The child's discovery of a wounded baby manatee sets off a poignant exploration of themes like grief, loneliness, and the power of small acts of kindness. Overhead, The Ruler observes the kingdom's slow decay as a foreboding storm approaches.
Without any dialogue or voiceovers, the film relies solely on its evocative visuals, music, and emotional depth to convey the story. The child's journey through grief is palpable, yet the presence of the manatee introduces a ray of hope amidst the sorrow.
Sky: Children of the Light has released the first look at "The Two Embers: Part One." You can watch the trailer right here:
Each week, a new chapter of the film will be unlocked in Sky Cinema, a specially designed in-game theater. Alongside the film, new in-game content related to each chapter will be available, allowing players to engage more deeply with the story through interactive elements.
A Unique Release Strategy
In a bold move, thatgamecompany has chosen to release "The Two Embers" within the game itself rather than as a standalone film or on a streaming platform. This innovative approach not only enhances the immersive experience but also elevates Sky from just a game to a multimedia storytelling platform. Alongside this cinematic venture, the game is also preparing for Aurora's concert, marking another significant milestone in its evolution.
The film is a collaborative effort produced by Light & Realm with thatgamecompany, and co-produced by Illusorium Studios and Orchid. This project represents thatgamecompany's most ambitious step yet into the realm of transmedia storytelling. If you haven't yet, be sure to check out Sky on the Google Play Store to experience this groundbreaking feature.
