Civ 7's 1.1.1 Update Aims to Boost Steam Competitiveness Against Civ 6 and 5

Authore: AlexanderUpdate:Apr 19,2025

Firaxis, the developer behind Civilization 7, has announced a significant update, version 1.1.1, aimed at revitalizing the game's appeal. This update comes at a critical time as the recently launched strategy game is struggling to maintain player numbers on Steam, with a 24-hour peak of only 16,921 players. This figure falls short of not only Civilization 6, which boasts a peak of 40,676 players, but also the 15-year-old Civilization 5, which saw 17,423 players in the same period. It's evident that many fans of the franchise are continuing to favor the older titles.

In a detailed post on Steam, Firaxis shared insights into the "additions and refinements" included in Update 1.1.1. Key highlights include:

  • Quick Move Functionality
  • New Natural Wonder Mount Everest
  • Additional UI Updates & Polish
  • Settlement & Commander Renaming
  • And more!

Lead designer Ed Beach provided a thorough walkthrough of these changes in a video, with full patch notes set to be released soon.

Civilization 7 Update 1.1.1 Patch Notes:

----------------------------------------

The Quick Move feature is now an optional setting that can be toggled in the game's menu, allowing units to reach their destination instantly and enhancing the game's pacing.

A new start position option for map generation has been introduced. The default setting for single-player games is now "Standard," offering a more varied and less predictable map layout reminiscent of Civilization 6. Meanwhile, the "Balanced" setting remains the default for multiplayer to ensure a fair playing field.

Players can now rename their settlements and commanders, adding a personal touch to their civilizations. Additionally, a new feature allows players to restart the game with a single click, generating a new map while retaining their chosen leader and civilization.

User interface improvements include a persistent city and town panel during purchases, new notifications for cities under attack, updated indicators for crises, and enhanced resource tooltips. The update also introduces significant changes to the game's pacing.

Alongside this update, new civilizations Bulgaria and Nepal, along with the new leader Simón Bolívar, are being added today, March 25, as part of the paid Crossroads of the World Collection.

Civilization 7 has stirred mixed feelings among long-time fans due to its new mechanics and has faced challenges in maintaining its player base on Steam. The game currently holds a 'mixed' user review rating on the platform and received a 7/10 from IGN's review.

In a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative feedback but remained optimistic, suggesting that the "legacy Civ audience" would eventually embrace the game. He described Civilization 7's early performance as "very encouraging" and hinted at potential future developments, including the beloved character Gandhi.
