The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to receive a modern twist with the upcoming release of Breakout Beyond. Developed by Choice Provisions, the studio behind the acclaimed BIT.TRIP series, this new version retains the classic paddle-and-ball mechanics but introduces a unique sideways progression. As players move from left to right, the challenge of breaking bricks remains central, with the game's lights and effects growing more intense as combos increase.
Breakout Beyond adds an exciting layer of variety with special bricks that trigger spectacular effects, from massive explosions to the deployment of an actual laser cannon. The game is set to feature 72 meticulously designed levels, along with an unlockable endless mode where players can compete on a global leaderboard. For those who enjoy a more social gaming experience, Breakout Beyond offers a local two-player co-op option.
Originally planned as an exclusive for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development has been taken over by Atari. Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."
The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with an anticipated 2020 release, has faced numerous delays and setbacks. Atari's acquisition of the Intellivision branding and rights last year did not include the Amico console itself.
Breakout Beyond is slated to launch later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
